You accept it on the spot with your signature – there is no time to think it over. Acceptance has the effect of a final judgment.
Letter after a speed camera (“fotoboks”) or average-speed check
The police first write to the registered owner asking who drove. Only the driver is punished – there is no owner liability for speeding.
“Forelegg” from the prosecutor: fine, often together with loss of licence
For offences above the fixed rates. If you accept, it has the effect of a judgment. If you do not, the prosecutor may take the case to the district court (tingrett).
“Overtredelsesgebyr” from the police or Statens vegvesen, e.g. for seat belt, tyres or documents
Not a criminal penalty: no points, no record. The duty to pay continues during a complaint.
“Parkeringsgebyr”: ticket from the municipality or police for illegal parking on a public road
You must pay on time even if you complain; the fee is refunded if you succeed.
“Kontrollsanksjon”: ticket in a managed car park
