Good to know

Fixed amounts nationwide

The ordningsbot amounts are set by the Prosecutor-General for the whole of Sweden; they do not depend on income. The speeding tariff in this version has applied since 01.11.2025.

The licence is the real risk

The fine is capped at 4 000 kr. Revocation weighs more: from 31 km/h over, normally two months.

Offences in the catalogue

Alcohol and drugs1

  • Drink-driving

The limit is 0,2 ‰ blood alcohol or 0,10 mg/l breath. For drugs there is zero tolerance.

    3 kap. 2 § trafikförordningen
  • Failing to give way, also at a pedestrian crossing

At uncontrolled crossings (övergångsställe) pedestrians have priority – also when they are just about to step onto the road.

    3 kap. 61 § och 18–23 §§ trafikförordningen
  • Illegal overtaking

Overtaking at an uncontrolled pedestrian crossing is also an express ground for revoking the licence.

    3 kap. 31–41 §§ trafikförordningen
  • Solid line, bus lane, prohibited road

    14 kap. 3 § trafikförordningen

Vehicle, documents and equipment4

Class 1 low-emission zones (miljözon) for heavy vehicles exist in Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö, Mölndal, Uppsala, Helsingborg, Lund and Umeå. Municipalities may introduce stricter zones for cars.

    4 kap. 22 a–22 d §§ trafikförordningen
  • Driving without lights

Dipped headlights are compulsory in Sweden at all times, also in daylight.

    3 kap. 68–70 §§ trafikförordningen
  • Tyres

Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 31 March when winter road conditions prevail (snow, ice, slush or frost) – for foreign vehicles too. Minimum tread is then 3 mm. Studs are allowed from 1 October to 15 April.

    4 kap. 18 a § trafikförordningen
  • Documents, registration, tax

Driving with no licence at all is not settled by ordningsbot: it is a criminal offence (olovlig körning) punished with day-fines or prison.

    3 kap. 15 § körkortslagen m.fl.

Parking and tolls3

  • Illegal parking on a public street

Felparkeringsavgift: a charge, not a criminal fine. Each municipality sets its amounts within the statutory range.

    2 a § förordningen (1976:1128) om felparkeringsavgift
  • Illegal parking on private land

Kontrollavgift from the landowner or parking company. It may not exceed the municipal charge for the same violation.

4 § lagen (1984:318) om kontrollavgift vid olovlig parkering
  • Congestion tax paid late

Trängselskatt is charged automatically in Stockholm and Göteborg, for foreign plates too. Foreign vehicles are invoiced via EPASS24.

    14 § lagen (2004:629) om trängselskatt

Bicycle and e-scooter1

  • Bicycle and e-scooter

    E-scooters legally count as bicycles.
